DJ (1986-87)
Nice Site!
If you wish to know, or add info to
the "Air Staff" listings, maybe the following info would be helpful:
I worked at WKAZ in '86 - when it was "The Beat of
Charleston," and also in '87 when it became "Power 13" the last year before it
effectively died after Chuck Horn departed. Then it was dark for many
months...the tower parts broke and were raided for Charleston South and FM
105. Then 1300 was finally
re-built and re-worked to simulcast what was "FM 105" which became WKLC
- Rock 105. I can still remember the A.M. making
Steve Clawson (former KAZ-KLC chief engineer) of 105's "Steve's All-Night Bar
& Grill" cuss like a banshee!
Johnny Chris also worked from 84-87 - he effectively
became PD when Chuck left. He and I were the
last 2 --working double shifts and / or 10 hour days was NOT fun!
Back when you had turntables and
knobs to operate ... makes me feel ancient!
But it was a great start for both Johnny and me ... I
went next door to FM 105 and Johnny went to V-100 before he fell off the face
of the Earth ! PD Chuck Horn went North to
parts I don't recall. "The Esquire" went to American Electric Power. He first taught me to board-op ...
We know where Virginia West is (WQBE-FM
97.5 in Charleston), and the last time I saw "Joel Jackson", he was hocking
insurance in Kenova, West Virginia.
Gosh - seeing your site took me back
to my first days in radio and helped me recall so many great folks and
memories I'd all but forgotten about...
Thanks!
